Leveraging Manitoba’s unique climate, Manitoba Canola Growers Association in collaboration with the Manitoba Agri-Health Research Network Inc. (MAHRN) are leading efforts to produce ‘small batch’ quantities of virgin canola oil. The project applies the concept of ‘terroir’- taking advantage of the set of geographic and soil conditions in a particular region to develop a regional brand- to cold press canola. One variety was grown in three diverse regions of Manitoba, resulting in a new product- virgin canola oil. Read more
According to the recently completed study, “Economic Impact to Manitoba of Increased Adoption of Healthy Food and Food Ingredients for Chronic Disease Management and Mitigation”, there is substantial potential savings of between $360 to 400 million annually to the health care system in Manitoba by changing eating habits to include more functional foods- a reduction of more than 10% of the annual health costs in the province. Agriculture economist Maria Jose Patiño Valiente, MSc used the Canadian Climate Advantage Diet (CCAD) model as the basis for determining the economic impact of increased consumption of functional foods on health care costs associated with diabetes and heart disease. CCAD promotes the health benefits from increased consumption of Canadian grown and processed crops and livestock products.
Manitoba’s place as a national leader in grain research, production and processing will be enhanced through three research projects funded under Growing Forward 2, Federal Agriculture Minister Gerry Ritz and Agriculture, Food and Rural Development Minister Ron Kostyshyn announced today.
